Using constructivist methodology as an approach to provide solutions to inner-city constraints on space

The project is simple. One 6m(l)×2.5m(w)×3.5m(h) box, the size of a shipping container. The object is to make this space work as a living quarter, complete with all the facilities needed for modern life, using the methodologies created by the constructivists in Russia (1920s-30s).

It began with examining the ideological underpinnings of Constructivism, its social and economic context and its aims. Then I examined the phenomenon of tiny living and mounted case studies that I could evaluate. I then researched the key players in the constructivist movement and their approach to working and made models and original artworks as primary research to discover and apply their modes of working. I then wrote down a list of elements of the machine for living, eg. Façade, Furniture, interior layout and made designs for each using constructivist ideology directly and applying case study sensibilities. I was then able to bring all the elements together into a shortlist of six final designs, one of which being made into a small-scale wooden model.
